TDC Games 2100 Reviews

TDC Games 2100 Review by SooperMum

I had to use an older PC to complete this kit because the software doesn't work on an Apple computer. If there is a Mac version I didn't see any info about it in the kit or on the makers website.
(**Note: It appears the product description has been updated to include the system requirements. At the time of my original review that info was not available.**)

Using this kit to make your own board game is very time consuming. I guess this made it a little easier than it would have otherwise but the included graphics and packaging are pretty cheesy, so don't get your hopes too high for the resulting product.

On the positive side, unlike other reviews I saw, I was able to use .jpg files with the version of the software that was included in my kit. They also have the latest version on the a website, which is listed in the instructions.

My 10-year-old daughter received this as a gift for Christmas from her 7-year-old brother. We just opened the box and, to our dismay, it has pieces missing (the clip art, 20 Monopoly buildings, etc.) Also, the CD that contains the software to make the entire game came completely unpackaged and unprotected inside the box itself. In fact, the unprotected CD was bouncing around inside the box and is (not surprisingly) scratched. What a disappointment. I've already printed the return labels and am sending it back for an entire refund. Shoddy.

When this product first arrived I was very disappointed with the quality. It looks nothing like a real Monopoly board and the game concept is only narrowly similar to Monopoly. However, as I started putting the game together for my son's birthday (he's a big Monopoly fan), I really came around to liking this product. For what it is, it's fine because the content has the potential to produce a great game, albeit not Monopoly as we all know it.

With a little creativity you can easily tweak the board and the components to be a little bit more like the original Parker Brother's game. For example, this "Opoly" game has two spaces called "Lottery" where the player is supposed to roll the dice and get matching numbers to win money (a ridiculous attempt to get around copyright issues). I simply covered those two spaces up and turned them into two more "Utilities" so that my game has a total of 4 Utilities (these function like the 4 railroads in Monopoly). The game also comes with "Good News" and "Bad News" cards which are supposed to be like Community Chest and Chance. The program that comes with the game is kind of useless because the cards end up looking cheap and they're smaller than real Chance and Community Chest cards. But again, you can get around that by creating your own cards on Microsoft Word (use the "Opoly" program as a guideline so that you don't mess up the money values in the game). I was able to download Monopoly icons from the Internet to make the cards appear more authentic, and I used my own heavy duty orange and yellow cardstock to print the cards. These good news/bad news cards are probably the most fun to create because you can take funny moments from the recipient's life and incorporate them into the game. The main properties were also fun because they are what make the game really personal. You can add your own photos or icons to the properties on the board with the "Opoly" program. Just be sure to buy extra sticker paper (most major office supply stores carry it) if you want to do more tweaking. I used extra sticker paper to make a bigger title sign because the program provided only allows you to make a title that covers part of the board, leaving one half of the title looking unfinished. The title deeds that you print out are again a bit cheap looking and inferior to the real deal. However, laminating the printed cards elevates the look substantially. I bought spare Monopoly houses on eBay so that we don't have to use the cheap-looking stackable pegs this game provides. I also made tokens from clay that represent my son's interests (football, tacos, traveling, etc.). The tokens provided are suitable if you want to personalize them with photos, but I already put so much time and energy into this present that I wanted tokens that were nicer and a bit more fun.

I constantly found ways to improve on this otherwise cheap-looking product. I think the main reason I would tell people to buy it, is to have a starting point. It's a little less work than buying an original Monopoly board and covering all the spaces and title cards with new information (because the "Opoly" software sets up all of that for you). With the all the improvements I made, I ended up spending a lot more than $20.00 on the game. So take all of this into consideration when you make your decision to buy or not buy this product. I will say that my family is very blown away by the game and it's really nice to create something that is special to the birthday boy. The Monopoly concept is there, even if the game isn't exactly the same.

By the way, this game program is not Mac compatible! I had to break out my old PC laptop to use the software.
